Our conveyor systems are often custom-built to meet our clients’ specific needs. While most of Planiform’s sales are in the United States and Canada, we also serve clients around the world.

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer contributes to the design, development, and implementation of automated conveying systems for a variety of customer projects. With at least 5 years of experience in mechanical design and after-sales/support service, the engineer also serves as a technical reference for resolving mechanical issues, optimizing installed equipment, and driving continuous improvement of the solutions offered.

 

Key Responsibilities

Projects

  • Design and develop automated conveyor mechanical systems (belt conveyors, roller conveyors, chains, transfers, etc.).

  • Produce concepts, technical calculations, drawings, and detailed layouts (2D and 3D).

  • Select mechanical components (motors, gearboxes, bearings, structures, mechanisms).

  • Participate in design reviews and ensure compliance with applicable standards (safety, performance, reliability).

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (automation, electrical, manufacturing, procurement).

  • Support manufacturing, assembly, installation, and commissioning of equipment.

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting schedules and budgets.

After-Sales Service and Technical Support

  • Provide technical support to after-sales service for equipment installed at customer sites.

  • Analyze and diagnose mechanical issues (failures, wear, performance).

  • Propose and implement corrective actions and technical improvements.

  • Participate in on-site customer interventions as required.

  • Prepare technical reports, recommendations, and design modifications.

  • Contribute to continuous product improvement to reduce recurring issues.

 

Candidate Profile

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or in the process of obtaining membership.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design of industrial equipment (ideally conveyors, automation, or material handling systems).

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical support/after-sales service (diagnostics, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, recommendations, and corrective actions).

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, power transmission, and structures.

  • Proficiency in a 3D design software (SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent).

  • Structured continuous improvement approach (e.g., DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control).

  • Proficiency in Root Cause Analysis and related tools (e.g., 5 Whys, Ishikawa diagram, FMEA).

  • Ability to perform mechanical calculations and technical analyses.

  • Knowledge of machine safety standards (an asset).

Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Autonomous, detail-oriented, and a team player.

  • Strong communication skills with customers and internal teams.

Special Conditions

  • May be required to travel occasionally to customer sites.

  • Work in both industrial and office environments
